toothache

Two nights ago, the kiddo woke up with a toothache. It was so bad he was begging for medicine to make the pain go away.  Within the past week he has been complaining about his front tooth when he eats crunchy things. For some reason, it was his back tooth that was bothering him this time.

We were able to get into the dentist the following day to have it checked out. His big tooth is coming in behind his baby tooth and that has been causing the discomfort when he eats. Within the next 6 months we can expect the baby tooth to come out. The dentist made it very clear that he does not want us to take the tooth out, we should just let nature run its course. He also doesn't want us to make a big deal about it. The toothache from the middle of the night was probably related to an earache.

We love our dentist.  He has gerbils in the office for the kids to play with and feed. He has a Wii entertainment center, play area, videos and a toy box all to make the kids feel relaxed at the dentist. He doesn't care if it takes half a dozen times before a kid is comfortable laying down in the dental chair. This was key for us, as we had not had very pleasant appointments at our previous dentist. I was amazed when we went in for the toothache and the kiddo did exactly what they asked him to. It was the first time he laid down in the dental chair without any fussing. It was amazing!

Since the kid started Kindergarten he has been more interested in drawing. I love watching how his pictures evolve over time. Here is a recent drawing of a "Pirate trick-or-treating with his Mom".

 
The kid was quick to point out that both the kid and the mom are wearing casts. Too funny! I also love that he included the detail of the pirate hat and the big smiles on both of their faces! He also included a knife for the pirate - which is his favorite part of his costume this year. He is running around the house right now yelling "Shiver me timbers" in full costume!

skydive, skydive

Apparently, the concept of  monkey see, monkey do is alive and well in Kindergarten. This past week our son has been chanting "skydive, skydive" rigth before he jumps. When I witnessed him jumping from the platform where he would normally slide access the fire pole to slide down, enough was enough. 

The kid is five, and I am shocked and amazed he has not broken anything yet. I'm a realist, this kid will break something - it is just a matter of time. He is totally fearless. I accept that, but when the 3 year old siblings of his buddies look at his antics on the playground after school and want to give it a try - we have a problem. Not to mention, jumping from a height of 5 to 6 feet is not the best choice for a kid his size.

The rule now is, if you jump we go home. Pretty simple...

dinosaurs are not extinct!

Last week, my son announced that "dinosaurs are not extinct"! At bedtime, the kiddo will often beg his Dad to tell him a story about when he was a kid. Hubby is very good at this - I'm beginning to think he should write children's books. The kid is completely enthralled when he is storytelling.

At some point, hubby explained that he and his sister had dug a big hole in their backyard and they found dinosaurs. When the kid made his announcement to me, I followed right along.

The kid is roaring in laughter as the hubby spins yet another tale...

the pumpkin patch

A few weeks ago, we ventured out to a local pumpkin patch. I'm embarrassed to say we left without any pumpkins! We spent all our time checking out the animals, riding the cow tractor, doing the corn maze and enjoying a nice lunch. I couldn't resist a carmel apple and it did not disappoint. I offered, but the boys didn't even want a taste. Lucky me!

The kid had a dress rehearsal in his pirate costume last night. He must have tried it on half a dozen times. It's a winner!

A few weeks ago, we found a youth sized guitar at a thrift shop for $10. Aside from a few scratches and some missing strings it was in pretty good shape. We took it to the local music store and they added new strings, tuned it and put a strap on it. The kid loves it!

  
Now he just has to figure out if he wants drum or guitar lessons...

little stinker to big sweetheart

A few nights ago, the kiddo went to bed in a very bad mood. It all started with dinner - I don't even remember what we were having, but he wasn't interested. No cause for alarm, we figured we would make up for it during his night time snack. Well, between dinner and night time snack there was a lot of  "I want quiet time". Did I say screaming! Hmm, this was not going well. The evening ended with the kid smacking me a few times and then going straight to bed. Not something I care to repeat anytime soon...

Tonight, on the other hand, he was a complete sweetheart. When I asked him to bring down some books to read before bedtime, he found one of my favorite books, Where the Sidewalk Ends. He plopped it down with the biggest smile on his face and asked me to guess which book he picked. Last week, he checked out, There is a Bird on Your Head, from the school library and he was so excited to show it to me. We both love these books, and laugh and laugh when we read them. When he told me he picked the book because he loves me, it made my day.

How is this the same kid, you ask? Oh, did I tell you he is a 5 year old boy. Good thing hubby got me the book, The Way of Boys last week. I've learned a few things that have already come in handy!

germs, germs, germs

It's been less then a month since school started and the kid has already been home sick for a total of 3 days. Yikes! I hope he starts acclimating to all of the germs soon.

The big bummer today was missing the Run for the Arts event. We will have to take him to the track at school and have him run around a few times, so he doesn't feel left out.

lunch date

Yesterday, I met my son for lunch in the school cafeteria. Joining over a dozen Kindergartners at their lunch table  was quite an experience! The entire cafeteria was filled with two other Kindergarten classes and all of the 1st and 2nd graders.

Towards the end of lunch, I was informed by a classmate that I had to stop talking when the music played. Another boy, quickly informed me that the quietest table gets to go outside first for recess. Before I knew it I heard my son yelling "Head down, quiet, head down!" to the entire table. Watching 16 little heads plop down on the table was an absolute riot! This was serious business.

After lunch, I joined them on the playground for recess. It was total chaos watching the kids running around. They were everywhere - digging in the dirt, jumping rope, swinging on the monkey bars, chasing each other, hula hooping, etc. I stayed back to observe and I was thrilled to see the kiddo introduce his classmates to a friend that he met the other day after school. It is so great to see him having so much fun!

I love tehterball- always have! When I was in the 4th grade, I had a tetherball setup in our backyard and I played it all the time. I've been talking it up to the kiddo ever since school started. After school today we did our usual routine of playing on the playground. I was so excited to see that the tehterball was actually setup. We waited our turn and then I showed the kid how to play. He wasn't quiet as excited about it. Go figure!

I did take the opportunity to show one of his friends some of my tricks. Her older sister plays and she just recently learned. I showed her one of my favorite moves and told her she would probably be able to win a game over her sister. You should have seen the look on her face - she was beyond excited! I played very "nicely" and resisted the urge to whip that ball around and show her my talents. I was just happy to have someone to play the game with me... Same time tomorrow?
